Cars in your Dreams

As I was sat in my office working, a trio of exotic cars drove past my window. My colleague and myself started to talk about our dream cars and we came up with a list of cars we would like to own if we could and why. I thought that you might be interested in my selection. The five listed are cars which unfortunately, unless I win a lottery, will never be able to own. Still… one can dream…

1. Lamborghini Reventon

Driving in the Lamborghini Reventon is what I can only imagine to be the perfect driving experience. The two-seater open top is the dream vehicle of choice for many a thrill seeker. It has a luxury sleek style and with a 6.5l twelve-cylinder engine it can zoom from 0 to 62mph in only 3.4 seconds.

2. Lotus Exige S 240

This masterpiece of English manufacturing is one of the most sought after cars available today. With a fixed-roof, this sleek sports car is totally suitable for everyday street driving, but can reach top speeds of 150mph and from a standstill 100mph comes up within 4.1 seconds. Sadly, this 1.8 litre is out of reach for many, with a price tag of around £45,000, though it is still one of the most affordable dream cars around.

3. Ferrari Enzo

Ferrari is perhaps the most famous super car producer in the world and the Enzo certainly lives up to expectations. The high performance sports car has an extremely beautiful body and comes in Ferrari red. As well as a carbon fibre body, this dream machine features a V12 engine with four valves per cylinder.

4. Aston Martin DB9

No wonder Aston Martins are a favourite with 007. The DB9 is a high-class automobile with a beautifully sleek design. The Grand Tourer is a favourite among racing fanatics and those who wish to drive around feeling the ‘bees knees.’ Achieving 0-60 in 4.6 seconds, no wonder its one of the most desirable cars out there.

5. Bugatti Veryon

No surprises here that the fastest driving car in the world enters my top five. Many a man’s dream is to own the Bugatti, but with a price tag of £1,150,000 unfortunately it's not remotely affordable by many of us mere mortals. The car can reach a top speed of 253.2mph, which reflects in the price. Despite the price tag, the Bugatti has been voted one of the most desirable cars on the market, as well as being arguably, the fastest in the world.

These are my top five cars and unfortunately it is very unlikely I will ever be able to own any of them. Of course, this doesn’t mean you’ll never be able to experience the thrill of driving one. Try searching for Red Letter Days Discount Vouchers or Red Letter Days Discount Codes on the net and see what deals you can find.

Many ‘Red Letter Day’ trips include driving some of the world’s most supreme super cars. They also make good presents, just imagine how you would feel if you opened a birthday card, only to find you have been given the opportunity to drive one or more of the most inspirational and breathtaking cars ever to have been manufactured.

So what are your dream cars?

Ford Focus : Global Car basically the third generation

Ford Focus
Ford Focus

The Ford Focus has always been one of the best-handling C-segment cars I’ve ever driven. The biggest drawback it has for the Malaysian market is that it’s a little small on the inside, being an European product where their C-segment cars are a little smaller. Their Civic is a smaller hatch compared to the large 2,700mm wheelbase version we get here.

And here it is, the latest edition of the Focus. Ford pegs it as all-new, and technically it should be considering that the 2nd generation Focus has already been facelifted. So this is basically the third generation and for the first time the Focus is a world car instead of being two different products for North America and the rest of the world. I had a go at the North American product earlier this week and I can understand why American journos have been calling for Ford to bring the Euro Focus across the ocean. Well, they don’t have to do that anymore – they are going to get this new global Focus as well.

The design is far edgier compared to the outgoing Focus. Ford attempted to add some Kinetic Design elements to the current Focus when it got facelifted but because there’s just so much you can change during a facelift, the end result was not as ‘kinetic’ as say, the new Fiesta or the new Ford Kuga. With this new body, Ford has pulled out all the stops with their Kinetic Design – check out details like the ‘zorro Z’ design at the front wheel arch. The ducktail on the sedan’s boot is also pretty prominent. Some might feel it’s perhaps a little too overdone, especially the details of the front bumper. They look like they belong on an aggressive model like an ST or an RS, but these are just your regular Focus models. But this could also be a good thing for some customers – no mods needed.

Wheelbase has unchanged, though the new Focus is a little longer mostly due to pedestrian safety requirements. This means the overhangs are longer. What this will mean is that the interior space is probably largely unchanged over the 2nd generation. Ford says based on their market research this is a good balance between size and fuel economy but to me, for a world car there definitely will be markets where a larger vehicle will be called for. After all, that is why Honda split the CIvic in two. In these markets, certain buyers will look to other vehicles no matter how good the Focus looks simply because of interior space. The new 3rd generation Focus also differentiates between the sedan and the hatchback variant more than the 2nd generation did. The vertical tail lamps are gone on the hatchback in favor of wider rear glass but the tail lamps remain mounted high-ish.

Changes to the platform between the 2nd generation and the 3rd generation mostly covers the way the suspension subframes are mounted. There has been some changes which are primarily driven by the desire to increase the level of NVH damping of the Focus. Thus you can expect the new Ford Focus to feel a little more refined than the outgoing one. Techniques such as the use of sashed doors, dual plane sealing, more aerodynamic wing mirrors and windshield wipers are used. Ford says the new Focus Global C platform shares only about one third with the new Mazda 3, while the rest are exclusively Ford.

Ford wanted the new Focus to be more refined and more quiet, as quiet is one of the factors that we take into account when our brains process the feel of ‘quality’. Quietness is also a big thing for what Ford defines as the new Ford flavor these days – they are investing alot into ways they can make their cars more silent, as I will show you in an upcoming post.

The Detroit showcar features a new 2.0 liter DI Ti-VCT engine. Those acronyms basically mean the engine has direct injection and dual variable valve timing, both on intake and exhaust. This new engine makes up to 20 horses more power than the current Mazda-based Duratec 20, while consuming 10% less fuel. The 4-speed auto has also been replaced by a new 6-speed Powershift dual clutch transmission. Apparently there is also an active grille shutter system, which shuts off some of the air intakes to improve aerodynamics whenever the extra cooling is not needed.

The new Focus will also debut an EPAS system for the first time. EPAS is basically an electric power steering. Alot of other manufacturers have started using EPAS systems in their cars but most people say an electric power steering is more ‘dead’ and unnatural compared to a regular hydraulic one. But Ford believes that a properly tuned EPAS can actually improve steering precision and feel over a hydraulic one.

According to Ford, there are over 250 parameters and settings in an EPAS that has to be finetuned in detail to achieve a good feel. As the 2nd gen Focus was a great drive, I hope Ford got all the variables right! There’s also a Dynamic Cornering Control system which counteracts slip on the inner wheel during a corner to improve cornering performance and turn-in.

Also new is the MyFord system, which is basically like iDrive. You use a phone-style 5-way button on your steering wheel to control the user interface. MyFord is built on Microsoft Windows Auto. Quite a few companies are basing their new in-car systems on Windows Auto, such as Fiat’s Blue&Me and the new system from Kia. There’s also voice commands, so you can say Call Muthu for the phone to call up Muthu in your phonebook. MyFord is the sibling to the touch operation-based MyFord Touch and MyLincoln Touch showcased at the CES end of last year.

This is one of 10 cars that will spawn from this new “Global C platform”, as Ford calls it. The first was the new C-MAX and Grand C-MAX MPVs which we saw at Frankfurt last year. Ford plans to put the this new third generation global Ford Focus into production for Europe and North America late this year, with a showroom debut in early 2011. It will be quite some time before it hits Malaysia (only early 2012 optimistically), but let me let you in on a secret – we’ll see an interesting new variant of the 2nd gen Focus here soon. This additional variant to the current generation Focus will feature diesel power!

Ford Focus RS - Good on Top, Great Underneath

Ford Focus RS
Ford Focus RS

Personally, I have never been a fan of the Ford Focus RS or otherwise. The 2009 RS has definitely started to change my mind, keyword being started. It may not look like much at first glance but this car has got a lot more to offer than meets the eye.

The Body: The front of the car is actually very nicely done in my opinion. There’s a big grill in front which sort of reminds me of the Mitsubishi Evo X and sexy 19 inch wheels. It’s also got some good looking curves as well as some wide fenders and the grill on the inside of the fender is a nice touch. The rear is a different story. It seems not to go with the rest of the car. The flow of the car seems all well and good until the rear sort of ends it abruptly. The splitter in the rear could have been done better but who knows, it could be one of those cars that grow on you. So the body seems 50/50 but the performance aspect is a whole other story.

Alright now let’s take a look under the hood. Are you excited? You should be! The new Focus RS has a lot to offer in the realm of performance. This car runs on a 5 cylinder turbo charged engine, delivering 300bhp with 324lb-ft of torque. Now that is a lot of torque, which is great, although the odd part is that the new RS is a front wheel drive car.So that much torque on a front wheel drive car is a little odd, why not 4 wheel? That aside, the RS doesn’t disappoint. Equipped with Revoknuckle suspension, the traction on the RS is out of control. There is no torque over-steer and can really grip those roads. When cornering with this car, the Quaife limited slip differential will keep it tight and ensure a nice and stable power increase around the bend. The new and improved Focus is also said to be exhilaratingly fast, taking you from 0-60 in less than 6 seconds with an impressive top speed of 163mph. No worries about the comfort, it’s Recaro seats will keep you relaxed and in place.

My Thoughts: When it comes to the look and body of this car, things have improved but not enough just yet. I would call the exterior a work in progress. Also I would probably go for another color instead of that green. When it comes to performance; The RS really lives up to it’s predecessors and refuses to disappoint on any level. For a car of its price, it really gives you the best bang for your buck.

Beijing Motor Show 2010 - Ford Start Concept

Ford Start concept
Ford Start concept

Ford's Start concept was one of the undeniable stars of Auto China this year. A diminutive five-seat premium car, roughly the size of a Mini, the concept surprised many with its minimalistic design and thoughtful details. Speaking with Freeman Thomas, Design Director at Ford's California-based Strategic Concept Group, CDN learned that the car was born out of an unconventional approach: it was actually modeled before being reversed into sketches.

The clean, timeless design was inspired by the nautilus shell as well as the rounded designs of the Alfa Romeo Zagato SZ and the Porsche 356 Speedster (owned by Thomas himself): "We wanted the car to be soft and endearing," Thomas said. "We love round shapes."

The resulting design is appealing, with a simple yet elegant surface and a friendly demeanor, but it is also a pragmatic and functional vehicle. Simple trim pieces, smooth door handles and a new interpretation of the front grille are joined by slender head- and taillamps with a lattice theme running through them, an element repeated in the C-pillar. Another key element in the brief was that the car had to be lightweight; this is where the idea for the small trunk – instead of the expected hatch – and the 'floating' B-pillar came from. "We needed the structure but we wanted it to float to make it visually lighter," shared Thomas.

A strong shoulder that blends into the surrounding surface aft of the rear wheel is also an interesting element of the design, fading out like a brush stroke on the bodyside, as is the well-proportioned matte aluminum trim that connects and defines the windscreen, DLO and backlight.

The interior also presents interesting features worth mentioning, such as the IP that sits on top of the dash so it can be easily adapted for left- and right-hand drive applications, and the floating front seats that mimic the curve of those on the 356. The rear seat features an unbroken curvature, enabling rear passengers to sit in a lounge-like space, amplifying comfort levels.

Ford Focus - Detroit Auto Show 2010

Ford Focus
Ford Focus

The US-spec Ford Focus never had the sales success of its European namesake, for obvious reasons: the ungainly vehicle always had the appearance of a spartan economy car that simply lacked the perceived quality of its European counterpart. The all-new Focus, however, signals Ford's intention to market the vehicle as a new global contender, and its newfound aesthetic is indicative of the Blue Oval's goals.

Shown in Detroit in four and five-door variants, the third generation C-segment vehicle was developed in the Ford of Europe's Cologne based-studio in Germany under the direction of Stefan Lamm, Ford of Europe's exterior design director. It implements the company's kinetic design theme but also pushes it one step further. The exterior design, created by lead designer Murat Gueler, is more upmarket than the Euro Focus it will soon replace and it accentuates the dynamic theme by appearing "fast whilst standing still," as Lamm told CDN.

The new Focus features a change in proportions over its Euro counterpart with a sleeker overall aesthetic, demarcated in profile by a pronounced featureline which begins just over the front wheelarch and drops down at the start of the front door, running across both door handles before kicking back up to accentuate the rear haunch. The trapezoidal lower and thin single bar grille give a new impression for the front and brings the car in line with its new Fiesta sibling and Mondeo, while the chrome-trimmed DLO elevates percieved quality.

The driver-focused interior, shroud in high-quality materials and designed by Tiago Dias under the direction of chief interior designer Ernst Reim, is also leaps and bounds ahead of its North American market predecessor, moving more towards premium German brands. The L-shaped IP is canted slightly towards the driver and features deeply recessed 3D dials and vents that are mounted vertically on the IP, while the center stack (with 8-inch LCD screen on premium models) doesn't exclude the front passenger.

Old Habits Die Hard - 2011 Ford Mustang GT

2011 Ford Mustang GT
2011 Ford Mustang GT

The Mustang GT has had a 5.0 liter engine in its bay for almost 30 years. It was only in 1996 that Ford went with the 4.6L engine. Well now the 2011 Mustang GT will get an increase in displacement to meet the 5.0 liters of days gone by. Since the Mustang was redesigned in 2010, not much has changed on the outside; but a lot has changed under the hood.

In order to deal with the Chevy Camaro and its 426 horsepower, Ford need to add some more muscle for the 2011 model year. So a bump in displacement and a reworked engine will net 416 horsepower; enough to contend with the Camaro SS 426HP and the Challenger SRT8 425HP. The Mustang already is the best handling car of the bunch, and with the added horsepower, the GT should establish itself once again at the top of the muscle car heap.

2011 Ford Mustang GT2011 Ford Mustang GT

Chevrolet struck a heart string with buyers when the 2010 Camaro came stock with a V-6 engine engine that produced 300 hp while getting 30 MPG on the highway. Ford has decided to follow suit and will introduce a 3.7 liter, V-6 engine in the stock Mustang that will generate 305 Hp, which is more than the Camaro V-6. Fuel Economy numbers for this engine is right at the 30 MPG mark on the highway.

WEITEC found success with their lime green Volkswagen project back in May, and have now released their latest tuning work on the 2010 Ford Focus RS, which looks very similar. The suspension specialists decided to customize this Focus RS with a new range of high performance products from their tuning company. Lowering springs, coilover suspension system, and sport shock absorbers are just a few of the new products WEITEC has to offer to the customer. With the addition of their SPORT F Springs, the Ford Focus rides 30 mm closer to the ground, giving it a much sportier look while improving the handling. These springs are reasonably priced at 174 Euros, but the tuners didn’t stop there.

The Ford Focus sports car then received a lime green paint job to match the tuning line that WEITEC has been releasing. An aggressive looking body kit was installed, along with daytime running lights, and a carbon fiber hood with air intake for cooling. Furthermore, the sport suspension kit improves both the driving dynamics and styling, while the Focus received a built-in guarantee of motoring enjoyment.

For the tuning enthusiasts looking for higher performance, WEITEC offers the HICON GT coilover suspension system to lower the car between 10 and 40 mm. They feature a galvanized steel housing with additional sealing to protect them from corrosion. The HICON GT comes as a complete suspension package with pre-set shock absorbers available at a price of 849 Euros. Finally, if the customer demands that their suspension needs adjustments while driving, WEITEC offers the HICON TX for the Ford Focus RS, which allowing adjustments from the drivers seat for 1,099 Euros.

Ford Focus ST set for Paris

Ford Focus ST set for Paris
Ford Focus ST set for Paris

A fire has been lit under the new Focus! An inside source at Ford has confirmed that a hot ST version of the all-new hatchback will break cover at the Paris Motor Show in October, alongside full production versions of the five-door and estate models.

Rumours have been circulating for some time about when the first new-generation fast Focus would rear its head, but only now do fans of high-performance cars have a date to put in their diary.

Back in March, Ford’s product development boss, Derrick Kuzak, revealed that the all-new Focus ST “will get an EcoBoost turbocharged engine, be exciting to drive, great to look at and certainly worth waiting for”. That suggests the outgoing car’s thirsty 2.5-litre engine is to be replaced by a more efficient 2.0-litre direct-injection turbo unit.

Precise power outputs have yet to be confirmed, but the 2.0-litre EcoBoost – already offered with 200bhp in the S-Max, Galaxy and Mondeo – could easily produce 250bhp and 350Nm of torque. That would pitch the ST squarely at Renaultsport’s Mégane 250, yet still leave room for a 300bhp-plus RS version later in the car’s life cycle.

The hot Ford is expected to be even faster than the super-quick Mégane, delivering 0-62mph in around six seconds and a 155mph top speed. But the ST’s trump card will be its ability to blend this pace with class-leading efficiency. Likely combined economy of 35mpg and 187g/km CO2 emissions would eclipse the 30mpg and 224g/km figures of the current ST by some margin.

In corners, clever torque vectoring software will juggle power between the front wheels to exploit every ounce of grip available to the new model. A variety of driving modes will alter throttle response and steering weight, depending on the driver’s personal preferences.

The Focus five-door hatch and estate are scheduled to go on sale in April 2011, with the ST version due later in the year.

Next-Generation Ford Focus with ST hot hatch

Next-Generation Ford Focus
Next-Generation Ford Focus

As the official launch of the 2012 Focus gets closer, Ford has outlined plans on uncovering several variants of its newest hatch. And at this year’s Paris Motor Show, the Blue Oval will reportedly kick off proceedings with the debut of a new Focus ST – known in NZ as the XR5 Turbo. The new Focus ST is expected to be powered by an uprated version of the 2.0-litre Ecoboost inline-four which is the same engine fitted to the Mondeo – but with output boosted up over the current 200 horsepower.

In ST form the engine should produce about 250 hp and near on 260 pound-feet of torque, with max torque arriving low in the rev range to help balance high-revving antics with respectable around-town driveability. The ST should reach 100kph in under six seconds with much improved economy over the outgoing model.

It was earlier this year that Ford acknowledged that it was developing a “global” performance version of the new Focus, but hasn’t stated what markets it will be offered in. Although NZ has missed out on the top dog Focus RS in the past the ST will most likely find it’s way down here sometime soon.
